Choosing the right way in

    The chat answers, Cowork acts on your files, and Claude Code works on code: three interfaces for the same family of models. What sets them apart is the tools the model can call and the context you give it. Code work goes to Claude Code, knowledge work to Cowork.

  2. 02Cowork, the default mode for a non technical user10 min

    On an account that has not yet moved to the new unified experience, Cowork acts directly on connected folders and is best split into small passes rather than one giant job; once the account has moved, the same actions happen from the same conversation as the chat, with a single approval setting for the whole conversation.

  3. 03Setting up the computer for long sessions5 min

    For a long task that touches your local files, prevent your computer's automatic sleep and switch on the Claude application's notifications. Claude Desktop must then stay open, awake and connected: if the computer falls asleep, the task stops with no sign other than the missing result. A fully remote scheduled task does not need it.

    Since chat and Cowork merged into a single conversation, you no longer pick a tool before writing: Claude decides for itself whether to answer or to act, and a single setting, Auto or Manual, replaces the old choices specific to each tool.
